I was honoured to chair the Athlete LGBT forum on Athlete Mental Health at the Crossing the Line Sport Summit in Ireland this week.  A group of the world’s very best athletes and dancers came together to discuss the fear they felt in disclosing their sexuality, while struggling with shame for not being authentically true to themselves.  Greg Louganis- four times Olympic Diving Champion, Gearoid Towey – World Rowing Champion, Breandan De Gallai – Premier Dancer of River Dance and Alish Eagan – Ireland’s Rugby international transcended Olympic and professional codes, men’s and women’s sports and the arts to give a united voice of support to the LGBT community.  While women’s sport appears to be more inclusive and supportive of difference, the LGBT community is stillstruggling under a cloud of secrecy in men’s sport that continues to place individuals at risk of mental ill-health and suicide.
